Accelerated Reader –AR Step-by-Step

Logging In for the first time

Log on to the computer using your last name followed by your first initial for the username.  Type in the password you were given.  When you see the box titled ADVANCED INF INSTALL, click the OK button.  When you see the normal desktop, press CONTROL, ALT, DELETE and click the “Change Password” button.  You must enter the old password (the one you got onto the computer with).  You will then be instructed to make a new password.  You must re-type the new password.  NOTE:  This section does not refer to your AR password!

Logging In any time

• Log onto the computer with your username and your NEW system password.  Go to the “Start” button at the bottom of the screen.  Click “Programs”, then “Accelerated Reader 5”, then down to “Student”.
• When you see the “Welcome” screen, click your mouse or press any key.  If you see a list of classes, click on (All Classes).
• Type your last name then (Enter).  Make sure your full name is highlighted, then click (Login).
• Type your AR password, then click (OK).

Taking a Reading Practice Quiz

• After you have logged in, click (Take Quiz).

• Click on the quiz you want to take, then click (Take Quiz).  If you do not see the quiz you want, click down arrow on the right-hand side of your screen.
       
  Shortcut – To find a quiz or test, click on the bar that says, “Title”.  Type the first word or two of the title (excluding “The” or “A”) and select the book title.  Make sure that you select the correct title and author.

• Click (Take Quiz)

• Read the question and click on the answer you think is correct.  If you change your mind, you can click on another answer.  Then click (OK).  Once you have selected (Next) you may not go back to a previous question.

• At the end of the quiz, you will be asked, “How did you like this book”?  Click on your answer, and then click (Next).

• The computer will tell you your score.

• Click (OK).

• The computer will print a TOPS Report for you.  Do not cancel the print command. 

Viewing Your Student Record Report (optional)

• After you have logged in, click (Report).

• The computer will show you your Student Record Report.  Click (Print) to print a copy but note that there is a 5¢ charge if you choose to print this, then click (Close).

• If you have finished using AR, click (Logout).

Logging Out

Go back to the bottom of the screen and click on the “Start” button.  Choose “Log off" (your username).  When asked if you are sure you wish to log off, click “YES”.
